Writing is a rough attempt at communicating  with another human being. Communication is conveying a thought across space from one human to another, and when successful, is duplicated and understood at the other end. Such an event is what distinguishes us from our animal kin and makes us at the top of the food chain. So when you attempt to communicat verbally, you have to truly mean to convey that thought, say it is about your big red apple you are  holding. So you make sure the other guy is ready to receive it, and you don't mumble, and send it across clearly. When he receives the message he signals "I got it," and you can only hope that he mentally duplicated or made a perfect copy of your red apple. If you held up the apple so he could see it, that would assure that your effort was worthwhile. If he was on the phone, you would have to describe it to him in words, but unless you were good at explaining things you could never be sure.

Moving up a steep level to writing is another thing entirely. For him or her to get your apple, you have to adept at choosing words to describe that apple. Of course you could send along a picture of your apple, and that makes it easy, for the old saying "a picture is better than a thousand words" really applies. You have "demonstrated" your message, rather than sending it with only significance of words. If it was trying to describe a tractor to someone who had never seen one with words only, it would be chancy that he approached an understanding unless you were really good at it. Put a picture of an apple in the text and you made it happen. you moved from significance into demonstration.

Can you imagine what you have as a lawyer, having only learned the law as it was and is significance only? When you get out of law school, like I did in 1960, you only have ideas and no real tools to grab and paint that picture or build that house. So to be a competent writer you must write. It took me many years before I felt competenet to sit and quickly write a piece like I am doing now. I stumbled and fell many  times, looked stupid, and finally reached a point where my message successfully reaches the eyes and understanding of my reader. You can too.
